Compact DC Motor with 60 Watt Output

The RE 30 was added to the current catalogue early this year. This mechanically commutated DC motor is 30 mm in diameter and 68 mm long, with two shaft ends and a nominal output of 60 watts.

Graphite brushes are used for the commutation. They are typically used in motors of this size due to their high current load and be-cause they are suitable for start-stop and reverse operation.

The ‘heart’ of the motor is the worldwide patented ironless rotor, System maxon. This motor principle has very specific advantages, such as particularly low mass inertia and very quick acceleration thanks to the lightweight rotor. There is no magnetic detent and minimal electromagnetic interference. Together with a neodymium permanent magnet which is one of the best magnetic materials cur-rently available, maxon’s ironless winding is much more efficient than other motor designs. It is suitable for applications where the drive is required to provide significant power in a limited amount of space, such as analysis equipment or robots.

Planetary gearheads can be added onto certain applications where the given motor speed is too high and inertia too low. The modular system can also provide a sensor for detecting speed and position.
