Weidmüller is extending its extensive program of PCB connection terminals by adding 135° wire exit variants to the compact, front-panel-cutout suitable LSF-SMT PCB terminals; these feature 'Push In' direct insertion technique for the pitches 3.5/3.81, 5.00/5.08 and 7.50/7.62 mm. Until now, the LSF-SMT PCB terminals were designed with wire exits at 90° (horizontal) or 180° (vertical) to the printed circuit board. The fresh addition of 135° wire exits to its program now allows the connections to be made comfortably anywhere on the PCB.
As well as being supplied in blocks with 2 to 8 or 24 poles (pitches 3.5/3.81), the PCB terminal LSF-SMT are equipped with soldering pins with lengths of 1.5 or 3.5 mm. They are also offered in machine-oriented packaging 'tape-on-reel'. This allows them to be processed together with other SMT components in the reflow soldering process. Taken together, this all ensures 100% continuity in the SMT production process. Weidmüller's components today already comply with upcoming RohS regulations (Reduction of Hazardous Substances) as well as fulfilling WEEE requirements (Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment).
With the aim of offering a safe and reliable connection system to support efficient wiring of complex electronics, Weidmüller developed the new LSF-SMT printed-circuit board terminals featuring the 'Push In' direct insertion technique. Easy and safe handling features as well as extremely low wiring times are impressive characteristics of this innovative connection system. Once stripped of insulation, the solid core wire is simply inserted into the terminal point until it butts against the stop – ready! No tools are required to make the connection. Flexible wires are connected by opening the terminal point – all the user is required to do is press the release button.
'Push In' can accommodate solid or flexible wires with cross-sections from 0.14 to 1.5 mm2 (AWG 24 - 16), with or without ferrules. It has been designed as a TOP system: wire insertion and operation of the direct-insert contact to disconnect the connected wire are performed in parallel to one another. The nominal current is 17.5 A (VDE). Depending on the pitch, the nominal voltage is: 3.5/3.81 mm = 160 V; 5.00/5.08 mm = 250 V; 7.50/7.62 mm = 500 Volt, in accordance with VDE specifications (VDE = German Association for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies). The rated data in accordance with UL and CSA is 300 Volts (industrial) and 10 Amperes. The 'Push In' contact system is based on the pressure spring principle, which means, the spring for the wire connection is retained in a separate cage. As well as reliably separating mechanical from electrical functions, this design principle results in greater wire retention forces. The pressure spring is protected by a stop restricting spring excursion. The cable entry funnel prevents the wire being inserted incorrectly. Moreover, flexible wires do not split apart when being inserted. The direct insertion technique guarantees a reliable, vibration-resistant and gas-tight connection – as do all of Weidmüller's connection systems.
The PCB terminals LSF-SMT are equipped with two soldering pins that guarantee reliable connection to the printed-circuit board. Users are able to choose between soldering pins lengths of 1.5 and 3.5-mm. Weidmüller recommends using the 1.5-mm pins for SMT and THR processes. The reason is, these require only very little soldering paste as well as guaranteeing trouble-free outgassing of the flux during the soldering process. The 3.5-mm soldering pin length should be preferred for conventional soldering process such as manual and wave soldering.
Weidmüller manufactures its LSF-SMT PCB terminals from the heat-resistant, halogen-free and inherently flame resistant (UL94 VO) insulating material LCP GF (Liquid Crystal Polymer with glass-fibre reinforcing). The high melting point above 335 °C is a distinctive feature of this synthetic material. Further features included dimensional stability and resistance to soldering heat. Thus, the innovative PCB terminals exceed EN 61760-1 requirements. Weidmüller's PCB terminals are suitable for use in all customary reflow soldering processes such as infrared, convection and vapour phase as well as for every lead-free method of soldering – which of course includes manual, selective and wave soldering processes.
The surfaces of the solder pin used in the LSF-SMT PCB terminals are made from pure tin (100% Sn) – in both the contact and soldering zones. For the purposes of lead-free soldering, they comply with Class IV specifications in accordance with DIN 45598: 260°C - 280°C for the soldering alloys SnAg and SnCu.
