Ex i IS pac isolators for temperature measurements with high packing density, limiting signals and Zone-2 installation

The R. STAHL company introduced a new generation of Ex i isolators featuring many innovative and unique functions last year: the IS pac series.
The Ex i temperature transmitter 9182 which combines high functionality with high packing density was developed specifically for the broad range of temperature measuring systems. The device has two channels with an overall width of only 17.6 mm, i.e. 8.8 mm per channel. Of course, inputs, outputs and power supply are galvanically isolated.
Despite the narrow design, it was not necessary to compromise in respect of functionality or possible applications. Thus, virtually all temperature sensors conventional in process control engineering, such as Pt 100, Pt 500, Pt 1000 and also Ni 100, Ni 500 and Ni 1000, in addition to thermocouples in accordance with IEC, DIN and even GOST (Russia), can be operated in an intrinsically safe manner. Even resistance transmitters up to 100 kOhm can be used. In the case of resistance thermometers, all conventional connection systems of 2, 3 and 4-wire configuration are supported, as are external Pt 100 reference junction measurements or constant reference junction temperatures in the case of thermocouples.

The high integrated functionality of these temperature transmitters allows use in an extremely wide variety of applications. Besides standard functions, such as linearisation, free measuring range setting and sensor wire break or short-circuit monitoring and error signalling via relay contacts, devices are also available with limit value monitors. The temperature signals are monitored for freely programmable limits, and alarm signals are issued via relay contacts in the case of overshoot or undershoot. Even a restart lockout can be programmed in this case.
All parameters can be set very conveniently and with menu prompting using the IS pac Wizard programming software. Alternatively, the most important settings, such as sensor type, 90 predefined measuring ranges per sensor type, output signal and circuit types, can also be set manually with DIP switches, thus dispensing with the need for a PC.
Like all IS pac isolators, the devices can be used either as stand-alone devices on DIN rail, with group supply and common error signal via the cost effective pac-Bus or in the innovative pac-Carriers. The pac-Carriers in particular allow easy, error-free connection to various control systems via prefabricated system cables and system connectors with up to 32 channels.

The Ex i temperature transmitters 9182 with the markings II (1) GD [EEx ia] IIC/IIB and e II 3 G EEx nAC II T4 are approved for installation in Zone 2, for connection of intrinsically safe circuits of Zones 0 and 1 and for dust-Ex applications of Zones 20 and 21. The devices can be used internationally owing to further certifications, including certifications for the American market in accordance with FM and CSA and for marine applications in accordance with DNV.
