After MOSRO, MOSRO Mini and OFRO, the Berlin robotics specialists Robowatch Technologies are now presenting the latest member of its product family: OFRO+detect, a highly engineered mobile security robot able to detect nuclear, biological or chemical hazards. “The mobile reconnaissance robot is based on our OFRO, which is already being used worldwide to protect large outdoor areas. Complementing the proven security technology for detecting persons, OFRO+detect possesses the latest sensors enabling it to sniff out all current tactical and industrial gases as well as radioactive materials,” graduate engineer Ulf Stremmel, Managing Director of Robowatch Technologies, explains.
OFRO+detect is a milestone for rapid aid in the event of a catastrophe by offering increased protection to affected persons as well as relief units. Hitherto, human staff had to assume the task of estimating the extent of the hazard within the briefest possible time and on location. In doing so, they often risked their lives. Now OFRO+detect investigates, for instance, type and concentration of the gas while simultaneously transmitting video images from the location to the control room. The flexible employment of the mobile reconnaissance robot thus ensures rapid initiation of well-targeted measures to protect endangered persons and facilities in hazardous situations.
These situations are manifold. On 8 June 2006, for example, the FIFA Football World Championships 2006 will be festively opened and millions of fans and guests from all over the world will watch the games on location or in front of the television. This is why security experts agree that terrorists or confused individual perpetrators may include the 2006 World Championships into their plans for action and attacks. Nowadays, this is a definite hazard looming over every big event.
More often than terrorist attacks are disasters aimed at chemical factories or road accidents involving the transport of hazardous substances. In industrial facilities, power stations or tank farms in particular, mobile gas detection systems on standby assume immediate importance. A late recognition of escaping toxic gases or vapours may lead to fires or even an explosion. Staff and relief units may fall into deadly peril with material damage quickly reaching millions. In future, the OFRO+detect - equipped with the Multi-IMS (ion mobility spectrometer) by Dräger Safety – will be able to detect all current war gases as well as toxic industrial gases.
The mobile outdoor robot OFRO - hitherto used for safeguarding large outdoor areas such as company grounds, stadiums or storage areas - forms the basis of OFRO+detect. Since its first introduction in November 2003, OFRO has been further developed in terms of custom-design.
Today’s third generation is thus even more powerful and utilises the same technical equipment as OFRO+detect: In the impact-resistant and weatherproof casing, two electric motors provide for the necessary power. Although the robot could drive faster, the recommended speed allowing for an optimal detection of persons is 4 km/h. The caterpillar drive enables the robot to deal with bumpy terrain while being extremely agile. With a total weight of only 65 kg, the robot can patrol up to 12 hours. Variations in temperature from -20° to 60° Celsius pose no problems. The sensor head rotatable by 360° with integrated LCD and thermal image camera enables OFRO and OFRO+detect to recognise potential delinquents, for instance, before they enter the property. The detection is completely independent of weather, area conditions or unpredictable movements (i.e. by animals) up to a distance of 100 metres. The onboard DGPS receivers and two receivers for correctional data provide for exact navigation. Robot communication is maintained continuously using the radio standards GPRS, UMTS and WLAN.
“With OFRO and OFRO+detect we are offering a worldwide unique advanced technology combining tested and qualitatively premium security technology on a mobile platform. Thus, we are supplying the answer to hitherto unsolved security issues – such as NBC protection in everyday situations. At the same time we provide security companies with a considerably more flexible solution to comprehensively safeguard stadiums, industrial facilities or major construction sites”, so Dr Jens Hanke, Managing Director and Chief Developer of Robowatch Technologies.
The standard-equipment OFRO costs ca. 55.000 Euro. For particular facilities it may be equipped with additional control modules. At a cost of 78.000 Euro, OFRO+detect will be available worldwide from July 2005.
