Sterilizable electromotors

maxon motor in Sachseln/Obwalden extends its range of high-precision drive units with three sterilizable motors that can reach speeds of up to 100 000 rpm.

Sterilizable electromotors are now available for medical technology applications. They are much quieter than compressed air turbines and the electric cables more flexible. maxon motor caters for a wide range of applications by offering three electronically commutated DC motors with diameters of 6, 16 and 22 mm that can be steralized in an autoclave. This particular method of sterilizing medical equipment is quick and the most commonly used, but it does place an extremely high load on drives and components, as the fol-lowing ambient conditions have to be withstood: saturated water vapour of 134 °C at 2.3 bar repeated for at least 20 minutes. In the past, only sensorless motors were robust enough to cope with the extreme loads in an autoclave, but the addition of Hall sen-sors to motors means that sterilizable highly dynamic servodrives are now possible.

A grooveless stator can be used thanks to a patented maxon wind-ing, making operation in a very wide speed range quiet and detent-free. The chosen winding design helps produce high speeds with relatively low voltages. These motors also fulfil all other re-quirements demanded of modern high-tech drives, i.e. long service life, easy to control, low electrical time constant, low induc-tance, overload capacity etc.
