ABB is launching new generation of large induction motors

The new modular induction motor, type designated AMI, utilizes the most efficient technology from its widely known and successful predecessors. The basic framework (IEC frames 560, 630 and 710) comes from a proven platform, added with new features based on thorough application understanding, wide experience and the use of the most modern, state-of-the-art design tools and processes, concurrent engineering and continuous reviews. All development work has been based on well-known standards, resulting in a product that fully supports the acknowledged IEC 60034 and NEMA MG1. Prototypes and tests are performed in order to validate the performance.

Comparing the new induction motor with its predecessor, the output per frame has been increased by up to ten percent reaching the output power levels of 11'000 kW (15'000 HP). The reduced noise and vibration levels bring enhanced convenience to the daily usage. The standard noise level of less than 82 dB(A) throughout the motor range speaks for itself. The noise level can be reduced even further with standardized options. Utilizing the stiff shaft concept in the overall construction enables smooth running in variable speed drive applications. This further reduces the vibration, thus increasing the reliability and lifetime of the motor. Stiff shaft is a proven concept which has now been taken to a new size level.

With an impressive amount of available options, the overall product flexibility has been increased. All in all, the new motor is able to meet almost any specific customer requirements. With a motor that includes all the necessary basic elements, and that can be tailored according to nearly all specific customer needs, ABB has managed to reach a combination of excellent productivity and highest customer satisfaction.
