Surface Movement Guidance Control System

BAA (British Airports Authority) have ordered an Alstom SmartControl Surface Movement Guidance Control System (SMGCS) for London Stansted, following rigorous competitive tendering and evaluation. The award confirms Alstom as the leading international SMGCS supplier, and will feature the first use of wide screen LCD touch screen technology for taxiway routing, fully validated to comply with the relevant national and international standards for safety related systems.

The field proven SmartControl system is in service at London Gatwick, London Luton, Birmingham, East Midlands, Isle of Man (all UK) and overseas airports, at Oakland, California (USA) and Lahore, Pakistan. The system caters for all airport requirements from a simple CAT 1 configuration, right through to a CATIII B Advanced SMGCS standard, making SmartControl suitable for small regional airports to major international hubs.
Working as part of an integrated project team with BAA and NATS, Alstom will deliver a significantly enhanced taxiway routing capability, giving high-speed route selection coupled with high integrity; specifically engineered to ease the workload of ATC and maintenance personnel.
SmartControl's Oracle based topological database, means that modifications such as additional taxiways and CCRs can be implemented simply, easily and safely by Stansted's own engineers without the need for any software changes. A high integrity, fully integrated Man Machine Interface (MMI) enables any changes made in the database to be directly linked to the touch screen, significantly reducing reconfiguration time and training. Used in conjunction with the widescreen LCD touchscreen, the database approach will enable instant reconfiguration to introduce the standby emergency runway or select displaced threshold operation, enabling full maintenance on Stansted's single runway. Thereby, safe and efficient aircraft operations are significantly enhanced, as demanded by low cost airline operators and scheduled airlines.
The integrated project team approach has facilitated
accurate requirements capture, defining detailed system
interfaces and ATC requirements, linked to a comprehensive
manufacturing, testing, installation and commissioning plan.
This will ensure a smooth transition from the existing system,
putting into practice Alstom's extensive experience of
retrofitting SmartControl into busy international airports.
