At Embedded World (Hall 12, Booth 404) Kontron unveils the Kontron pITX-SP: its first long-term available Pico-ITX embedded Single Board Computer. The ultra-small (10cm x 7.2 cm) Kontron pITX-SP SBC based on the Intel Atom Z5xx processor and Intel System Controller Hub US15W offers maximum connectivity on an extremely compact, standardized footprint and is one of the most cost effective solutions for SFF devices currently available.
The new Kontron pITX-SP is a low power (5W) and highly integrated standard embedded SBC designed in accordance with the Pico-ITX form factor that the SFF-SIG (Small Form Factor Special Interest Group) has been independently developing since 2008.
“Kontron’s tiny new pITX-SP Pico-ITX Single Board Computer brings the low power and high performance of the Intel Atom processor family to a new class of applications which were unable to use larger form factor SBCs”, said Paul Rosenfeld, President of the Small Form Factor Special Interest Group. “SFF-SIG is particularly pleased with Kontron’s innovative early adoption of the SIG’s new Pico ITX standard.”
The Kontron pITX-SP offers all interfaces required for the fast and easy development of cost-optimized and extremely small x86 embedded designs and ultra mobile devices, making it predestined for a wide range of applications in the gaming, digital signage and POS/POI kiosk sectors as well as all other embedded segments that require price-optimized performance on the smallest footprint. It is also an attractive x86 alternative to RISC based handheld sized solutions with the added advantage of a wide software base and simple application development for fast time-to-market and lower total costs of ownership.
Kontron’s first Pico-ITX board is based on the Intel Atom Z5xx processors up to 1.6 GHz and the Intel System Controller Hub US15W with up to 1 GB of DDR2 RAM. The Kontron pITX-SP has an impressive feature set with 1 x GBit Ethernet, 4 x USB 2.0, up to two SATA interfaces, a parallel IDE44 interface as well as a socket for MicroSD cards. 1 x DVI-D (up to 1920x1080 @ 60Hz) as well as 1 x Jili30 (single channel, up to 1280x1024 @ 85Hz) and a backlight inverter enables connection of all types of panels. In addition, Kontron’s smallest embedded SBC offers shader based 2D and 3D graphics, 256 MB of graphic memory as well as an integrated decoder for MPG2 and H.264. Audio devices can be connected via line in, line out and MIC to the integrated HDA controller. Customer-specific expansions are supported via 1 x SDIO pin header and 1 x digital IO (4 bit).
The Kontron pITX-SP Pico-ITX embedded Single Board Computer supports Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows XP Embedded and Linux. First samples will be available shortly after the Embedded World.
