Knürr Technical Furniture has installed six latest-generation air-traffic control workstations in the air-traffic control tower at Zurich Airport. Every day, the air-traffic controllers in this area control and monitor more than 700 flight movements on the apron of the Swiss aviation hub. The demanding nature of an air-traffic controllers everyday duties determines the requirements in terms of workstation architecture. Even during the planning phase, the users themselves attached great importance to ergonomically designed workstations. A separate height-adjustment facility for tables and monitors was therefore provided as well as an electrically operated monitor-tilt adjustment system to prevent users being blinded by reflections from the screens. A particular challenge was to incorporate the existing technical equipment into the new tables in a space-saving and revision-secure manner. This equipment includes the radio and telephone system, sensitive systems such as the taxiway lighting control system, the dock control system, the electronic flight-strip system, the ground radar and other operating components.
