Magnetic cylinder sensor with IO Link: remote teach-in and diagnosis

SICK is consistent in its exploitation of IO Link technology and is correspondingly expanding its product portfolio. The MZ2Q-T / IO Link, presented at the Hanover Trade Fair 2007, is the first magnetic cylinder sensor that can be integrated into a machine’s fieldbus environment. The two switching points offered as standard by the MZ2Q can now be remotely taught-in and monitored.

While the housing of the MZ2Q-T is small and compact, the potential advantages of-fered to users by IO Link are enormous. Thus expansion of the sensor’s switching out-put to create a communication interface allows, among other things, parameter down-load from a machine controller, comprehensive remote diagnosis, increased plant avail-ability, automatic plant documentation and – important for the chemical and pharma-ceutical industries – validation of the entire machine right down to the sensor.

Individually addressable via fieldbus

The MZ2Q-T / IO Link is used, for example, for object detection on grippers, clamps or presses in which a pneumatic cylinder with a movement of up to 50 mm functions as an actuator. The sensor’s two freely adjustable switching points permit the reliable detec-tion of defined end positions, or generation of an advance signal to initiate targeted re-duction of piston speed. Thanks to the IO Link communication interface, definition of the switching points and their monitoring can now be carried out automatically and remotely via fieldbus, e.g. from the machine controller. For this purpose, the MZ2Q-T / IO Link has an individual identity number that makes it addressable during communication.

Proven advantages retained

The advantages familiar from the ”standard” MZ2Q remain: short housing, space-saving and reliable mounting in the slot, lower installation and cabling effort, and high switching accuracy.
