With the LSM 5 MP system, Carl Zeiss MicroImaging is introducing a laser scanning microscope specially configured for multiphoton microscopy that offers an excellent price/performance ratio. Highly efficient coatings on the optics ensure minimal power losses of the directly coupled femtosecond lasers. Leading edge filter technology guarantees efficient suppression of the exciting light with simultaneous highly sensitive detection. Objective lenses adapted to the needs of multiphoton microscopy and featuring optical correction in the near infrared spectral range allow the optimum use of different IR excitiation wavelengths, also into ranges of over 1,000 nm. As these wavelengths enable even greater depths of tissue penetration thanks to lower absorption and scatter, their use in multiphoton microscopy is particularly beneficial. The objective lens is especially suitable for electrophysiology combined with multiphoton microscopy. It allows the imaging of larger areas of the specimen with excellent resolution and light collecting efficiency.
