The introduction of HSDPA confronts network operators with the challenge of providing complete availability of new services by means of intelligent network planning. They must decide which parts of the existing UMTS network to upgrade first with HSDPA, for future HSDPA users will share resources with other UMTS users and must be adequately covered. To be able to selectively assign a particular network capacity to HSDPA subscribers, network operators must adapt the HSDPA parameters on the air interface as necessary.
With the new R&S CMU-K72 HSDPA monitoring option, Rohde & Schwarz makes it possible to analyze the data flow on the high speed shared control channel (HS-SCCH). Node B uses this signaling channel in the downlink to tell the UMTS mobile phone (i.e. the user equipment) when the next data packet will be assigned. In the uplink, the UE sends a return signal indicating whether all of the data arrived.
The R&S CMU-K72 decrypts the complete data traffic – including the messages as to when and in which quantity data was transmitted and correctly received. This allows the user to see which volume of useful data was actually received by the subscriber. On the basis of these data throughput measurements, network operators can, for example, set up selected user groups to be granted priority with respect to the assignment of resources.
Equipped with the R&S CMU-K72 option, the R&S CMU300 can simultaneously analyze four HS-SCCHs with up to 128 UEs altogether. In addition, the option features a UE-ID scan function. The network dynamically assigns an ID to mobile phones. Before the actual HS-SCCH analysis starts, the scan function automatically locates the active UEs and thus makes it easier for the user to record the current data traffic. Besides the new functions, the R&S CMU300 also acts as a platform for scenario and system tests, allowing physical HSDPA transmission parameters to be checked.
The new R&S CMU-K72 option is now available from Rohde & Schwarz.
