SICK is presenting the second generation of the high-speed KT 10 contrast scanner, the KT 10-2. Its most important features are automatic drift correction (allowing the scanner itself to adapt its switching threshold to changing operating conditions), automatic dazzle adaptation during print mark detection on foils, and the possibility of saving up to five sensor parameter sets in the device and activating them from the machine controller. The KT 10-2's response time, reduced to just 16 µs, now permits use at even higher machine speeds.
Contrast scanners operate on the reflection principle and detect grey value differences on objects, e.g. print marks on newspapers, magazines or packaging. The grey value contrast is of decisive importance for reliable detection, i.e. the difference in brightness between the mark and its background. The more problematic the contrast, however, the more powerful the contrast scanner's evaluation capability has to be. This is how standard devices differ from high-end devices like the KT 10-2.
Maximum detection reliability
The KT 10-2 uses a three-colour LED as the transmission light source. The device automatically selects the spectral range that generates the best contrast values. As a result even light yellow marks, for instance, can be reliably detected against a white background. The KT 10-2's automatic drift correction and dazzle adaptation are two further features of decisive importance for reliable contrast mark detection with high repeatability accuracy. Moreover, operators can read off the detection quality from the device's new bar indicator during commissioning and operation and, if necessary, make readjustments.
Easy installation and operation
The KT 10-2 is easy to install and operate. In addition to a rotatable M12 device plug, it has two selectable light exit directions to allow mounting in any orientation. The light spot generated by the sensor on the object has a very high geometrical resolution. This provides very good local resolution. The teach-in process itself can be activated by pressing a button on the device or via the external control cable. The bar indicator provides information on signal quality. Up to five different parameter sets, e.g. for five different packaging materials, can be stored in the device and called up when necessary.
Industry-oriented device design ensures high level of availability
Its industry-oriented design (in an IP 67 metal housing) guarantees high scanner availability. Immunity to impacts and vibrations in line with IEC 68 is also assured. The switching outputs are available as PNP- or NPN-switching options. Reverse-polarity protection, on/off standardisation, enhanced immunity to ambient light, short-circuit and overload protection, and suppression of interfering pulses are standard protection circuits integrated in the device. Important for upgrading: the KT 10-2 is fully electrically and mechanically compatible with its predecessor – one-to-one replacement is thus possible without difficulty.
