Biometry for Passengers and Staff Members

With a daily flow of 100,000–200,000 passengers, and several ten thousand staff members, the population of a large airport is as difficult to manage as that of a city. The situation is made even more complex as these figures are constantly increasing.

Under these circumstances, traditional security systems can no longer sufficiently prevent identity fraud. To secure air travel, Sagem contributes various strategies and equipment based on biometrics, smart cards and secured transmission technologies. Recently, the leader in Automated Fingerprint Identification Systems (AFIS), rounded-up its biometric profile with iris and face recognition. Sagem´s multi-biometric technology can now handle population databases of all sizes with equal ease.

As airports call for high security solutions, Sagem has developed MorphoTrack, an automated immigration control system: Low-risk frequent travelers previously enroll to the system. MorphoTrack then considerably reduces waiting times at passport control. Above identification (1:N), specific smart cards or passports can be used for authentication (1:1). Instead of queuing for a long time at the immigration control, the travelers now are positively recognized through their biometrics, usually fingers or iris. The entire passage takes an average 20 seconds compared to the lengthy manual control.
With an extensive automated travel document reconciliation system, it can then be verified that the passenger who boards the aircraft is really the one who checked in. In a second phase, each passenger´s biometrics can be matched against a database, as to prevent undesired individuals from boarding. For this, from the check-in counters to the boarding gates, the biometric (finger) templates are either written on the boarding pass or transmitted by the Digital Control System network. In that case, a provisional biometric data base is implemented. This procedure is very fast and can be completed during the normal check-in boarding process.
One of the internationally most noticed biometric projects has been implemented at Aéroport de Paris, authenticating about 90,000 staff members. More than 110 outdoor MorphoAccess units in the two Parisians platforms perform more than 30,000 controls per day. Airport staff members using the device are quickly guided through the authentication process with friendly messages.
As the needs of airports differ, various solutions are available, tailored to the customer´s requirements. The solutions secure anything from travel documents and passenger boarding, to background checks of employees and access control to strategic areas. The products include the PC-based application MorphoSmart, a multi-purpose fingerprint processing unit with a high-end optical sensor and micro-controller for encoding. For physical access control, the plug-and-play sensor MorphoAccess with optional contactless card reader and fake finger detection is well suitable. It allows authentication or identification of up to 48,000 people, usable in a stand-alone or networked connection. Additionally, MorphoAccess Enrolment and Management System MEMS can be integrated in a physical access control system at low costs and with few modifications. Last but not least, MorphoTouch is a multi-function hand-held terminal, used in systems requiring high performance mobile sensors.
Sagem supports various international and national organizations influencing the future biometrics development with regards to the transport market. Sagem is an ICAO and IATA registered supplier as well as a World Business Partner of ACI. The group actively participates in the IATA-chaired Simplifying Passenger Travel Interest Group.
