Hygiene and cleanliness are becoming increasingly important factors in the home textile and contract sectors. Following the launch in November 2002 of our new antimicrobial flame retardant fibre for these sectors, we can now announce entry of the first Trevira CS Bioactive home textiles into the collections.
Bioactive fibres act in the following way. The use of antimicrobial Trevira fibres reduces the formation of bacteria in textiles, and particularly their multiplication.
This action is achieved by carrier-bound silver which is integrated in the fibre polymer.
The advantage of this technology lies in the fact that no agents from the fibre can reach the skin, which is precisely what occurs when textiles are coated with disinfectants. Using the Trevira Bioactive process considerably reduces the risk of undesirable side effects. Another benefit is that the antimicrobial effect is permanent, since it is built into the fibre.
The Hohensteiner Institute certifies that Trevira Bioactive possesses a significant to strong antimicrobial action, that is, it prevents the exponential growth of bacteria on the fibre surface. The latest comparative study indicates that even after a few hours there is a clear reduction in the quantity of bacteria found on Trevira Bioactive, when compared with textiles made from traditional materials. One additional result is that the frequency of wash cycles is considerably less.
For the user of Trevira Bioactive home textiles the new fibre constitutes a greater degree of hygiene, cleanliness and freshness. Alongside the new Trevira CS Bioactive fabrics, there are already many Trevira Home Bioactive articles on the market. Decorative fabrics can well take their place in curtain screening in hospitals. There is a lot of interest in this field in the American market for instance. Here too it is not difficult to envisage its use in hotels, following its closely related presence in medical and care institutes. In particular this is one consequence of growing global mobility and the resultant increase in hygiene requirements that hotels have to face.
