The many advantages of image-assisted code reader systems are making them more and more popular, and provide a key competitive edge to users. The systems are winners in every respect: mobility, functional reliability, range of features, user-friendliness, flexibility of application, cost-effectiveness and ease of installation.
Absolutely reliable identification – excluding any possibility of using the wrong product – is essential to smooth-running production operations, compliance with standards and regulations and quality certification, customer satisfaction, parts logistics, ensuring cost-effectiveness, maintaining security against fakes, fulfilling product liability requirements, and in preserving the brand image of the company. The codes applied to each individual product by various methods permit full tracking all along the value creation chain through to the end-user customer.
The new DataMan 8000 range of hand-held ID readers from Cognex with built-in high-resolution image sensors (1280 x 1024 pixels) incorporate a wealth of unique features and functions to deliver unmatched levels of performance.
Liquid lens technology: It is the world's first hand-held reader to employ state-of-the-art liquid lens technology. The basic way in which it works is that an electrical voltage acts on the liquids in the lens and causes a controllable deformation of the lens surface. This allows the focal length to be quickly adjusted – so enabling rapid autofocus or zoom – with no moving mechanism and controlled entirely electronically. Liquid lenses have already delivered ample proof of their outstanding quality, reliability and robustness in the DataMan 200 series. Their extremely fast, processor-controlled focal length adjustment provides a high degree of flexibility for applications in the 0 to 250 mm range. This enables 2D codes to be read in close-up, or long barcodes to be alternately read from a distance.
Modular communication design: A unique aspect, not found in any other hand-held reader, is the unit's modular communication options. By a quick and easy exchange of modules providing RS232, USB and – in particular – Ethernet ports, users are able to adapt to new requirements or upgrade their reader at any time. Wireless Bluetooth communication is also available as an option.
Outstanding 1D and 2D code reading performance:
The extraordinary capabilities of 1DMax and 2DMax, featuring ultra-precise and fast-working image processing algorithms, enable all commonly encountered codes to be effectively read as well as enhancing the possibilities open to users. Thanks to the patented 1DMax® technology, barcodes which were previously unreadable due to low contrast, damage, bending or distorted perspective now pose no obstacle to optimum reliability in reading product IDs. It also ensures that barcodes can be read omnidirectionally, regardless of their position and orientation. Whatever the size, quality, printing method or surface on which the code is applied, IDMax® technology always guarantees correct reading of all code types – even in unfavorable lighting conditions.
Thanks to its integrated patented UltraLight®, the reader model 8500 offers the advantages of three different modes of illumination. Dark-field illumination is important for dot-matrix printing or laser-produced DPM (direct part mark) 2D codes. The likewise integrated lateral bright-field illumination and flood illumination also provides for reliable reading of codes on curved and severely reflective surfaces.
