Power Integrations announced the launch of its HiperPLC (high power, power factor corrected, LLC, controller a new Power Supply Control IC with integrated high voltage half-bridge drivers and PFC Controller in a single IC package.
PI starts with the PLC810PG as a first member of a whole new family of highly integrated and efficient Controller-ICs in a new market of a higher power level of 200W to 600W.
With this family PI will underline its ambitions to expand their market position also to applications in higher power areas in future.
Due to the combination of both Controlling ICs with the 800V half-bridge drivers and all important protection and elementary functions a very high level of integration with best possible matching could be realized.
The PFC works in the Continous Conduction Mode (CCM), which minimizes AC flux and ripple current at the input. This eliminates the need of expensive Litz wire in the input choke and reduces also the size of the PFC bulk capacitor which is often designed very big in common discrete designs. Additionally there is no need for AC input sensing.
The PFC- and LLC-Controlling unit is frequency and phase locked and ensures a single switching frequency with less harmonic contents for the entire power supply.
This greatly simplifies the PCB layout, minimized parasitic elements in the circuitry and is speeding up the development with a very low external component count.
Target markets are beside the usual industrial applications also consumer electronics e.g. flat-panel TVs, power supplies or PC and workstation power supplies and high-brightness LED streetlights and all applications with high requirements concerning the efficiency.
To support the design, Power Integrations released a 300W Evalboard (RDK-189) using the HiperPLC PLC810PG and the software package PI-Expert is including the new family from January ´09.
