Laser Transmitter Modules for 10Gb/s and 8Gb/s SFP+

With its new transmitter optical sub assembly (TOSA) series Mitsubishi Electric has developed four 1.3µm band laser modules for optical transmission at speeds of 10Gb/s and, respectively, 8Gb/s.

Each individual module fits into an enhanced 8.5 and 10 Gigabit small form factor pluggable module (SFP+) measuring just 13.3mm x 13.4mm x 56.5mm. Compared to XFP (10 Gigabit small factor pluggable module) the SFP+ compliant transceivers are 60 percent smaller in width and 70 percent smaller in length. The new devices use a Flexible Printed Circuit (FPC) for the electrical interface between the modules and transceivers.

As this FPC is 80 percent smaller than comparable solutions the new module can be installed in SFP+ compliant transceivers while simultaneously keeping the LC receptacle package of the 10Gb/s miniature device (XMD-MSA).

By using highly-efficient distributed feedback laser diodes (DFB-LDs) for medium and long-distance transmissions and fabry-perot laser diodes (FP-LD) for short-distance communications, the new product can operate at currents of just 70mA, which is 20 percent lower than the current consumed by previous modules. This leads to a decrease in power consumption as well as to an increase in operating temperature to 90 degrees C, which is 10 °C higher than before.

With these features the new TOSA series (FU-456RDF and FU-466RLD for 10G and FU-442RDF and FU-443RLD for 8.5G transmission) from Mitsubishi Electric enables the design of small transceiver systems. These are operating with low power consumption over a wider temperature range which is essential features to achieve high-density installations in fiber based applications like metro area networks and high speed storage area networks.
