Forwarding CAN data via Ethernet

CAN-based networks require special cable connections. Special adapters are also required for the purpose of integrating PCs. This can sometimes incur considerable costs. To solve this problem, SSV is now able to offer CAN2LAN router software for its embedded device server modules. This makes it possible to transfer any kind of CAN data over TCP/IP-based Ethernet LANs in a transparent way. The CAN2LAN solution involves the interconnection of two CAN networks via an existing Ethernet LAN.

The CAN2LAN router software is available for the DNP/5280 and DNP/5282 embedded device servers from the DIL/NetPC family. Both modules are based on a 32-bit MCF5282 ColdFire processor from Freescale. The memory consists of 8 MB Flash and 16 MB SDRAM. The available interfaces take the form of two UARTs, one SPI, one I2C, one CAN, one 10/100 Mbps Ethernet LAN interface and parallel GPIO signals. Mechanically, the servers rely on a 40-pin (DNP/5282)/64-pin DIL format (DNP/5280) with 2.54 mm centers.

To enable the software properties to be adapted to a specific environment, the CAN2LAN router software features a user-friendly web-based interface for browser access via an Ethernet LAN. This can be used to set the parameters and data transfer properties of the CAN interface. In addition, the configuration interface also makes it possible to specify the network behavior. For example, the TCP or UDP communication protocols and the relevant port numbers can be configured.
