The BD Pathway Bioimager manufactured by BD Biosciences has been designed for automated screening with an optional confocal mode and including a CO2 chamber, temperature control and integrated liquid handling system. The system may be used for analysis of live and fixed cells for endpoint assays and recording of kinetics on the cell level. Different sample types such as multiwell- or microtiter plates (e.g. BD Falcon Imaging Plates) or glass slides can be observed. The screening process is performed with cellular of subcellular resolution in selected wells or on the whole plate. Both loosely adherent and supsension cells can be imaged since the BD Pathway design has the objective lens mounted on a motorized scanning head, whilst the sample remains fixed in position. The confocal mode based on the Nipkow spinning disk technology shows several advantages: real-time-analysis, simultaneous observation through eyepieces, wide spectral range (360700 nm) based on epifluorescence illumination for broad dye compatibility.
