A major feature of the MPC5200S is its multifunctional external bus that offers an ATA/IDE interface as well as a V2.2 compatible PCI bus. With an on-board flash memory of up to 2 x 32 Mbyte (via Bank Select), the user can store entire operating systems. If expanded memory is needed, a compact flash card or hard disk can be installed via the ATA/IDE controller. Depending on the model features, 16 Mbyte – 128 Mbyte SDRAM is available as main memory.
The processor offers up to six serial interfaces. These can be used for numerous different synchronous and asynchronous protocols. The J1850 controller originates from the automotive sector as does the MSCAN (Motorola scalable area network) module with two CAN controllers. Additional serial busses are available through the two I²C controllers and the SPI controller. Both controllers support both master and slave mode. A driven serial interface handles communication tasks. On the TQM5200S, the PSC1 of the processor has corresponding V24 levels on the module plug. The MPC5200S offers two USB interfaces (USB 1.1 host). In addition, a PCI bus is freely available to the user. Additional functions can be realized using the Local-Plus-Bus.
When designing the TQM5200S, particular emphasis was placed on achieving compact outer dimensions of 56 x 60 mm² (formerly 80 x 60 mm²). The module is equipped with the particularly robust 0.8 mm mezzanine connection system optimized for industrial use. All of the components used in the module are specified for an extended temperature range of -40°C to +85°C. In addition, the user is guaranteed at least 10 years of TQM5200S solutions maintaining the same design and function.
Numerous industrial features such as long-term availability, robustness and size enable the use in an industrial environment.
