Therapeutic Temperature Management

The Arctic Sun 2000 represents a new non-invasive approach to therapeutic temperature management. The Arctic Sun System rapidly induces mild hypothermia in those patients who would benefit from therapeutic hypothermia or rapidly reduces temperature in febrile patients. The Arctic Sun precisely monitors and maintains core body temperature in a range of 33°C (91.4°F) to 37°C (98.6°F). The Arctic Sun functions in response to feedback from a patient temperature probe. Circulating water temperature is controlled between 4°C (39.2°F) and 42°C (107.6°F) to achieve a preset target patient temperature. The control algorithm changes the temperature of the water once the patient approaches the target to minimize temperature overshoot. The Arctic Sun maintains precise control of temperature and can be used for days a time. The Arctic Sun Energy Transfer Pads cover approximately 40% of the patients body surface area, which is the minimum requirement needed to properly and efficiently cool a patient. Temperature controlled water circulates at a high velocity through the Energy Transfer Pads, resulting in efficient heat exchange from the water to the patient.Water circulates under negative pressure, which minimizes the risk of leakage in case of accidental pad puncture. This flow pattern enables a thin design, allowing the pads to be more conformable for the patient. The Energy Transfer pads cover the patients back, abdomen and legs. ECG electrodes and defibrillator pads may be placed under the Energy Transfer Pads. If chest tubes or other tubes are present, simply cover the adhesive with the enclosed liner or fold the pad onto itself. The minimal surface coverage enables excellent access to the patient. The Arctic Sun Energy Transfer Pads are single use, radiolucent and latex free. The pads can be removed and reapplied numerous times on the same patient without loss of adhesion.
