Reduce Costs!

These days, many Airport Operators are faced to reduce operating costs without making any compromises on safety and quality standards. In this regard, cost efficient operation of the lighting system is second to none. Under these aspects, several airports are increasingly asking for features which help to reduce maintenance costs and increase reliability and performance of the light fixtures. For runway and taxiway inset lights, the use of a single Pk30d halogenlamp instead of two cold mirror reflector lamps will considerably reduce the costs for re-lamping.

Glued in prisms and lenses protects the light fitting from moisture. Moisture and humidity will result in insufficient light performance and increase maintenance costs due to corrosion and humidity in the housing of the light fixture. Corrosion requires time consuming maintenance and repair work while the exchange of scratched or blind prisms will result in growing costs for refurbishing or replacement of such items. A prism protection plate will prevent prisms from being scratched by overrolling airplanes, ground vehicles as well as sweeping machines or snow ploughs.

The new generation of IRC (infrared reflective coating) halogen lamps will further increase the life cycle of the halogen lamps. Combined with the seal tight design of the Erni inset and elevated lights it will certainly challenge today's LED technology. Actually this technology is still in the stage of development and characterized by high prices for LED-light fixtures, costly failures due to mechanical impacts. The Airport industry has not yet decided over any form of standardization of the LED technology - a fact which may complicate the integration into existing systems and prevent second source solutions.
